One evening, Mr. Utterson is surprised when Poole, Dr. Jekyll’s servant, visits him. Poole is very upset and tells Mr. Utterson that something is terribly wrong at Dr. Jekyll’s house. He fears that someone has harmed Dr. Jekyll and that the person in the laboratory is not his master.
Mr. Utterson goes with Poole to Dr. Jekyll’s house. The other servants are scared, and they all believe that the voice coming from the laboratory does not sound like Dr. Jekyll. Poole reveals that he saw the person inside and is sure it is Mr. Hyde wearing a mask.
They decide to break into the laboratory to find out the truth. Armed with an axe and a heavy stick, Mr. Utterson and Poole force the door open. Inside, they find Mr. Hyde lying dead on the floor, wearing Dr. Jekyll’s clothes. It seems he has poisoned himself.
They search the laboratory but cannot find Dr. Jekyll anywhere. They discover a letter addressed to Mr. Utterson. In the letter, Dr. Jekyll asks him to read Dr. Lanyon’s message and then his own confession to understand everything that has happened.
