While Alice was alone, she saw the White Rabbit coming back, looking worried and searching around. “Oh dear! Oh dear! I can’t find them!” he exclaimed. Alice realized he was looking for his fan and gloves. She wanted to help but couldn’t find them anywhere.
The Rabbit saw Alice and mistook her for his housemaid, Mary Ann. “Why, Mary Ann, what are you doing here?” he said. “Go home right now and bring me my gloves and fan!” Surprised, Alice ran off in the direction he pointed.
She found a neat little house with “W. Rabbit” on the door. She went inside and hurried upstairs, worried about meeting the real Mary Ann. In a tidy room, she found a fan and several pairs of white gloves. As she was leaving, she noticed a little bottle without a label. “I wonder what this does?” she thought and drank from it.
Suddenly, Alice began to grow bigger and bigger until her head hit the ceiling. She was too large to get out of the room. “Oh no! I wish I hadn’t drunk so much!” she cried.
The Rabbit came back, angry and impatient. When he couldn’t open the door, he decided to enter through the window. Alice tried to stop him by putting her hand out the window. The Rabbit called for help, and other animals came. They decided to send someone down the chimney.
A small lizard named Bill was sent down. Alice gave a little kick, and Bill flew back up the chimney. The animals outside started throwing pebbles at her. The pebbles turned into little cakes on the floor. Curious, Alice ate one and began to shrink until she was small enough to escape.
Once outside, she ran into a thick forest. “I need to grow back to my normal size and find that beautiful garden,” she thought. While searching, she saw a large mushroom. She looked on top and saw a blue caterpillar sitting there, smoking a long pipe.
