Two weeks later, Dr. Jekyll hosts a dinner party for some of his friends, including Mr. Utterson. After the other guests leave, Mr. Utterson stays to talk privately. He brings up the topic of the will and expresses his concerns about Mr. Hyde.
Dr. Jekyll tries to laugh it off and tells Mr. Utterson not to worry. He says that he can get rid of Mr. Hyde whenever he wants. However, he also asks Mr. Utterson to promise that if anything happens to him, he will help Mr. Hyde and make sure he gets what is in the will.
Mr. Utterson is confused and worried. He does not understand why Dr. Jekyll cares so much about Mr. Hyde. He feels that his friend is hiding something important. Dr. Jekyll insists that it is a private matter and asks Mr. Utterson to drop the subject.
Reluctantly, Mr. Utterson agrees to help Mr. Hyde if necessary, but he remains troubled. He fears that Mr. Hyde has some control over Dr. Jekyll or is blackmailing him. Mr. Utterson decides to keep a close eye on the situation to protect his friend.
